THE WRECKING CREW- JUNE 19 - JULY 2

THE WRECKING CREW (2008, Digital, 98 min, Dir: Denny Tedesco, NR) You may not have heard their names, but you've heard their music. Director Denny Tedesco chronicles the musical history of his late father, the legendary Tommy Tedesco, and his compatriots Hal Blaine, Carol Kaye, Al Casey, Earl Palmer, Plas Johnson, and the other L.A. session musicians known informally as "The Wrecking Crew." Uncredited and unknown outside the industry, these musicians played on a staggering number of hits, collectively recording more number one singles than Elvis and the Beatles combined. The Beach Boys, The Byrds, Paul Revere and The Raiders, and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass are but a few of the acts whose hits were in fact played almost entirely by these session cats; and artists ranging from Frank and Nancy Sinatra to Ike and Tina Turner benefited from the impeccable backing of the Crew. Featuring revealing and often hilarious conversations with people from both sides of the mixing board, this documentary reveals the foundation of the 1960s West Coast music scene and the faces behind the soundtrack of America.

ANVIL!

ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL - JUNE 19 - JULY 2

ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL (USA 2008, 35mm, 90min, Dir: Sacha Gervasi, NR) At 14, Toronto school friends Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner made a pact to rock together forever. Their band, Anvil, went on to become the “demigods of Canadian metal,” releasing one of the heaviest albums in metal history, 1982’s Metal on Metal. The album influenced a musical generation, including Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, and went on to sell millions of records. But Anvil’s career took a different path—straight to obscurity. Director Sacha Gervasi has concocted a wonderful and often hilarious account of Anvil's last-ditch quest for elusive fame and fortune. His ingenious filmmaking may first lead you to think this a mockumentary, but it isn’t. It's fascinating to see the reality of their day-to-day lives as they struggle to make ends meet, take a misguided European tour, and engage in antics on the road—which is not always lined with fans. Gervasi even finds a softer center to this raucous film, introducing the band members' ever-supportive, but long-suffering, families. At its core, ANVIL! is a timeless tale of survival and the unadulterated passion it takes to follow your dream, year after year. Anvil rocks—it has no other choice.

DESPERATE MAN BLUES

ATHENS FOLK MUSIC & DANCE SOCIETY PRESENTS:
A CELEBRATION OF ART ROSENBAUM

THE ART OF OLD-TIME MUSIC - WEDNESDAY JUNE 24th

An evening of music, visual art and film celebrating Grammy award-winning artist Art Rosenbaum and his work documenting traditional American musical culture. A Professor Emeritus at UGA's School of Art, Rosenbaum is a folk music historian who has studied and recorded traditional music for over 30 years, and recently won a Grammy this year for the Dust-To-Digital box set compilation, Art of Field Recording Volume I: Fifty Years of Traditional American Music Documented by Art Rosenbaum.

SCREENING: DESPERATE MAN BLUES: DISCOVERING THE ROOTS OF AMERICAN MUSIC
(2003, Digital, 55 min, Dir: Edward Gillan, NR) This award-winning documentary is the story of self-proclaimed king of record collectors Joseph E. Bussard, Jr. of Frederick MD, who has amassed probably the greatest collection of 78 rpm recordings of country, blues, jazz, cajun and gospel music in the world. To call it a hobby would be an insult: it’s his life. Collectors and musicians come to see and hear first-hand what is considered to be the most vital, historically important privately owned collection of early-20th-century American music. Although other formidable private record collections exist, what makes Bussard such an undeniable force in old-time music circles isn't simply his collection but what he has done with it over the years. It is a fusion of obsessive, almost pathological hoarding and an equally strong impulse for rampant dissemination. He has got to own the record, yes, but he wants the whole world to hear it, too.

SCREENING: SING MY TROUBLES BY (2009, Digital, 20min, Dir: Neil Rosenbaum, NR) a special short preview of Neil Rosenbaum's upcoming feature documentary on women carrying on Georgia's folk music traditions. This film has developed from Neil's father, Art Rosenbaum's field work, and presents the music and lives of folk artists heard on his Grammy-winning compilation. Featured in the documentary are Mary Lomax, arguably the finest singer of unaccompanied Appalachian ballads to emerge in the 21st century; Bonnie Loggins: Mary's sister, singer, song-maker and painter; Fleeta Mitchell, a 96-year-old blind gospel singer and pianist; Rev. Willie Mae Eberhart, pastor of the Bible Outreach Mt. Ararat Mission in Athens, Georgia; the Myers Family and Friends from Apple Pie Ridge, Georgia who have played guitars and sung traditional and original mountain songs most of their lives; and Precious Bryant, noted south Georgia country blues singer and fingerstyle guitarist of the Piedmont tradition.

PLEASE CALL HOME: THE BIG HOUSE YEARS

PLEASE CALL HOME: THE BIG HOUSE YEARS - FRI JUNE 26th

PLEASE CALL HOME: THE BIG HOUSE YEARS (2008, Digital, 110min, Dir: Kirk West, NR) From 1970 to 1973, the Allman Brothers Band called the Tudor-style mansion on Vineville Avenue in Macon, GA, their home. “The Big House,” as it came to be known, quickly became the communal hub for the band, their family and friends. This full-length feature documentary, shot in stunning Hi-Def, chronicles the era that saw triumph and tragedy as the band went from playing free concerts to selling out stadiums across the country, but also lost two of its brothers, seminal slide guitarist Duane Allman and bassist Berry Oakley. The story of the rise to prominence of this renowned group that broke down color barriers as the first integrated rock band to come out of the South, PLEASE CALL HOME was directed by long-time Allman Brothers Band Historian, Archivist and Tour Magician, Kirk West, who with his wife Kirsten, purchased the Big House in 1993. Proceeds from this screening will benefit the Big House Foundation, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization established to create an Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House to honor the Southern rock legends.
