MOVIE + MUSIC: RED HEROINE w/DEVIL MUSIC ENSEMBLE - MON OCT 6th
The DEVIL MUSIC ENSEMBLE will be performing their new original score live to the silent martial arts film RED HEROINE (1929, dir: Wen Yimin). This film is the only surviving extant Chinese silent “Kung Fu” film left from the silent era and is a prime example of the terrifically popular Chinese swordplay genre (wuxia pian), often based on published novels or serials, and an early cinema export, which was banned after the Cultural Revolution. The score that the DME has composed pulls from the traditions of Chinese classical and folk music, as well as soundtracks from classic Kung Fu cinema, and is the only modern score made expressly for this film. This is a very rare performance that showcases the combination of the ancient tradition of martial arts, early 20th century Asian film, and 21st century music.
The DME is three multi-instrumental musicians from Boston that have been making their name with live original score performances to classic silent film, performing over six U.S. and two European tours. Formed in Boston in 1999, the DME is comprised of Brendon Wood on electric guitar, lap steel, and synthesizer; Jonah Rapino on electric violin, lap steel, vibraphone, erhu (2 string Chinese violin) and synthesizer; and Tim Nylander on drums, and a variety of Chinese percussion instruments.

MENTAL HEALTH BENEFIT SCREENING: A SUMMER IN THE CAGE - WED OCT 8th
Filmmaker Ben Selkow's feature-length documentary chronicling his friend Sam's battle with manic-depressive illness, also known as bipolar disorder. By showing the difficult emotional impact of being bipolar on Sam, his family, and the filmmaker, the film hopes to put a human face on an illness that affects millions of American families. But as this dramatic story unfolds, it also becomes a unique tale about friendship and the ethical responsibilities of a documentary filmmaker. The intent was to make a film about successfully living with, and managing, a mental illness. Throughout the process and when the Hollywood ending proves too elusive, the filmmaker and the subject are forced to ask themselves, "When do you turn off the camera?"
Screening and panel discussion presented by the MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION OF NORTHEAST GEORGIA as part of Mental Illness Awareness Week.

SCREENING: GREENSBORO: CLOSER TO THE TRUTH - THURSDAY OCTOBER 9th @ 7p
On November 3, 1979, members of the Communist Workers Party were holding a Death to the Klan rally in Greensboro, North Carolina. Suddenly a caravan rounded the corner, scattering the protesters. Klansmen and Nazis emerged from the cars, unloaded an arsenal of guns and began firing. Five people were killed in what became known as the Greensboro Massacre. This documentary film reconnects 25 years later with the players in this tragedy—widowed and wounded survivors, along with their attackers—and chronicles how their lives have evolved in the long aftermath of the killings. All converge when the first Truth and Reconciliation Commission ever held in the United States is convened in Greensboro from 2004-2006 to investigate the Massacre. As the Commission struggles to uncover what actually happened and why, the participants confront the truth of their past, and struggle with the possibility of hope and redemption.
Screening and panel discussion presented by the MOORE'S FORD MEMORIAL COMMITTEE
